Laura and I went out for some pattern work. My first two rounds were shaky but OK; there was some pilot-induced turbulence :-) but not for long. Sank faster than I recalled on the 2nd and so I had to pull her in under power; that's never good. For #3 I decided to sim a lost engine. It went well, I think; I really didn't touch it and definitely jockeyed her down to a smooth landing.
Then came the fun part... A fellow 3-4 miles away, who had been listening, asked as I was on the go if I was going to stay in the pattern, and I replied that I thought I'd try a right turn this time. He said he'd keep an eye out, and all seemed fine, but Coleman came on as I was about to turn from crosswind to downwind to say that I should read my regs before trying that. I asked him what he meant and he wouldn't answer, and then it was time to turn to base and come in, so I left it for the moment. After landing we went over to the FBO and I asked what he meant; he showed me 91.126b1 that says 'must', not merely 'should', make left turns. Whoops! Apparently that changed in '04, but also apparently many don't know it, since I was trained with some right patterns! Wow...
