Flight: 2010-0319-1 in N37148 (BlueBird) for $
KAHN - KAHN (flying time 1:1)
Got to take Michael up to see his house while we were over in Athens for a visit in the middle of a lovely flight with Laura. If only our vacuum (pressure) pump hadn't decided to die *sigh*
[Y]ou did a great job of putting me at ease, I had a great time, and like I said, it's my first time in a plane that I wasn't praying on the way toward a landing :)
From KAHN (Athens Regional Airport) 2010-03-19 19:42:57 to KAHN (Athens Regional Airport) 2010-03-19 20:43:48 [01:01:00] with 3 day and 0 night landings.
David Thorburn-Gundlach (pilot-L) / Michael Gundlach (passenger) /
Although formerly very firmly not interested in anything of the sort, after watching planes very casually come and go for 20 minutes while awaiting our arrival, Michael was ready to try a ride -- woo hoo!
After the preflight and standard safety briefing -- which, as expected, set him more at ease in the foreign environment and let him relax a bit -- we headed off following a few roads and eventually finding the way to his house. Along the way he got to see the aerial view and was amazed at how different it is from what the groundpounders see :-)
Next it was back up to altitude and time for him to fly -- and he even asked me for the chance shortly before I was going to offer! After just a few minutes of dual fingers and feet, he was on his own and really doing it, and while not quite permagrinned I do think he liked it.
Back on time, we beat Laura and Fish from their jaunt, so we went back up for two more in the pattern and he even got to watch a sim eng out landing (which, like my others, was rustier than I like but quite acceptable). All in all it was a wonderful afternoon!
[Y]ou didn't warn me ahead of time that you'd be fake-stalling the engine, and to a newbie like me it took a minute to realize that we weren't doing something mildly dangerous like actually turning it off. But you gauged my comfort correctly -- as this wasn't something to show off hey watch how steeply I can bank!" but rather something you clearly did to keep yourself in shape, I wasn't worried.
