Laura flew up to Hendersonville to hand off Nana the Aussie on her way to New Jersey and her forever home, and I flew back. It was an awesome day to fly, although the up- and downdrafts were at times quite surprising. (David Thorburn-Gundlach)

Leg Notes:
I have to say that Hendersonville is to date the smallest airport where we've ever flown. Landing and taking off was like being on a normal road, and although 3000 ft sounded like plenty when we usually use 2400-ish it sure looked small when we were there! But departure was uneventful.
Then came the trip back over the ridge to get to Pickens County. The mountains were gorgeous, but Laura bounced around a bit on the way in, so I just stayed straight out until I was a good 1000 ft up before then turning and heading not just over but for a pass across the ridge. I was doing 65 (didn't want be any closer to stalling over the ridge) and still barely climbing! The descent down to Pickens County was uneventful, though, and we stopped in for lunch and gas.

The trip home from KLQK was delightful and uneventful, with lots of fun opportunity to fly by chart and eyes and generally enjoy ourselves. It was really tough to maintain altitude, with winds pushing me up and down hard, but at least my heading was fairly constant (although, BTW, the DG seems to drift even more than usual). It was weird coming across KGVL from almost due East and not having to turn there to go home :-) After finding the lake we turned a bit to line up on the pointy mountain and then broke off when we saw the white tank and Cherokee some 17nm(!!) away. A clear day is amazing!
Just as we were about 7nm away over the tank someone else was 8nm out on the west side, so I just slowed down to about 75 kts and let her go first. Wow; 75 never seemed so slow but we were just hanging up there! There was only a tiny headwind, too; we truly were poking along :-) From there I just set up on a long base leg and came in for a lovely landing and then, having left the earth and returned safely thereto, put BlueBird to bed even though we could have gone and done the whole thing again!
