Wow, I actually get to ride with Quin again! Perhaps they'll keep enjoying this through the summer. That would be awesome. (David Thorburn-Gundlach)

Leg Notes:
Had a nice flight over to KGVL, where they had some busy going on. Had a really scary near-miss over there, though; yikes! Still trying to nail down how much was my fault.
We had been watching some traffic about 6m south as well as listening to folks in the pattern. I had tried for 5500 feet but was closer than I liked to some clouds, so I headed back down and was in the 4500-5000 range when I made a new friend. I was about 6nm out and headed for midfield to pick up the downwind when suddenly I see a twin rocketing up and right at me from my 10 o'clock or so. Whoa! He saw me, too, and banked left, and I had time for a moderate bank; I didn't head down since he was coming at me from below. I have no idea how close he really was; I'm left with just a terrified feeling of OH MY GOD! I did a quick check of the Zaon and there was nothing in sight; huh? I figured he had forgotten to turn on his transponder, but in hindsight perhaps he just hadn't yet been pinged by radar.
Sooooo... How much was my fault? I had been listening to traffic in general and don't recall anyone taking off at that time, but perhaps I missed that. I was still high and far enough to be out of the pattern, but then that would mean that this guy wasn't likely to be climbing out after takeoff. If he wasn't, though, then shouldn't he have shown up on the Zaon? If he was, on the other hand, then I must somehow have been way to close even at 6nm out. In any case, not fun; since nobody else was around at the moment, I just turned right and headed directly for left base.

Leg Notes:
A much less eventful ride on the way back! :-) Aimed for Jasper for fun, but got sidetracked on the way by a private airstrip. Quin was so very sure that it was Jasper that I set up to check it out just for fun even though Home Depot wasn't just beyond it. Sure enough, it was an airstrip, but it was 30GA at Ernie Elliott's race shop :-)
Once we had taken a turn over that it was late enough to need to head home, so we turned for Cherokee and she tried again (and, this time, nailed it). (BTW, I see there's no photo of 30GA over at AirNav, so just maybe I'll take one and get it listed! :-)
