David Thorburn-Gundlach (pilot-L) / Sebastian Velasquez (instructor) /
Leg Notes:
We took off in moderate clouds, but with things thick enough that I couldn't see the horizon, I get to claim actual rather than simulated! Woo hoo. And there were bits of ground clearly visible, but with the focus inside -- especially since I was still partial 'cuz the DG was still flaked -- it was easy to stay true to the learning. Sebastian filed, and off we went.
Of course, I also forgot to turn my GPS back on because it's never off, so I also have no track. Bleah. Well, that was the worst thing that happened on the trip; it was a good day.
We also had a fun communications glitch on the way in... We broke into clear maybe 15nm out, so then we were able to find the airport and be handed off as usual. The funny part, though, was that Sebastian kept being surprised that I didn't have 'Greenville Downtown' right in front of me, even pointing out the 'Downtown tower'. I just couldn't for the life of me find the airport past the city and was getting a bit frustrated until I realized that the tower he meant was a high-rise office building and the downtown he meant was the city center and, no, he couldn't really see the airport either except to know its general vicinity and *maybe* discern the main runway. Well, yeah, I could see the city! So we canceled and changed freqs and headed in, now certain that we were both talking about the same thing :-)
