Leg Notes:
Well, this turned out to be interesting... I was rushed and *so* didn't plan properly, so I had to cheat out a route in midair -- and then Sebastian had me turn off the GPS on tabitha (since this is about VFR and pilotage) and I wasn't thinking, and his copy got eaten by iOS, so I have no track! :-( Other than that, though, it was a lot of fun :-) As a bonus, the DG was on the fritz, so it was mag all the way.
We planned a hop from Greenville to Chattanooga to Pickens, which gets to take me over some foothills as well as past lakes and towns and other helpful features. Some pretty hefty clouds started to develop, though, so we turned early and headed South.
There were some clouds toward our destination, too, which made things fun. Ellijay was always an option through the last 20 miles, so we kept on to see how things would go.
THe most interesting bit was the last 5 miles or so. I was fairly certain of where I was and heading for a pass, but Sebastian was worried about the mountain height and recommended coming around to approach more from the West. His main concern was that I was heading for a squeeze between cloud and ground, especially when I could follow the highway and be where clouds weren't as full. I don't have the forensics to go back and review, but it is a VERY good point and probably the single most salient thing I learned today. I have *no* interest in becoming a statistic :-)
In the end, it was a great trip that we made in good time so that we could tell kiddos about flying. W00t!
