There's no way I'm spending a month down here and not taking a sunrise flight! I at least got Laura to come along with me today :-) We have some substantial weather about 80nm offshore, so we'll have to see what that does for our view.
Got to the airport and off right on time -- 0600, about half an hour before sunrise -- but in fact it was already pretty darned light by the time we were up. I think that was OK, though; it *was* before sunrise, and we were just starting to see colors in the clouds; any earlier and we would simply have been flying in the dark & waiting. Good to know for planning, and that means that half an hour should be more than enough in the winter, too. I wonder how long twilight would last up north (note: about 45m instead of 30m :-)
Anyway, we flew up the coast to put the sunrise on the right, and we did have gorgeous color under the storm clouds. Yay! We decided to keep going and see how far 25nm is to get an idea of what a tour could cover, and the answer is 'a lot'. Can't wait to play more with that!
It's amazing to me how many private airfields, even beyond what's marked on the chart, are down there on the marsh islands; we found what looks like another on the way to check out a prior (which was, indeed, within the 25nm limit).
It was time, finally, to turn back, which put the sunrise over my shoulder -- but, with the storms, we were now finished with most of the colors as the sun went behind the cloud band. Enjoyed a trip down the beach (although I could have been closer; everything was pretty small) and a turn over Jekyll before lining up for a left turn onto 34.
I was delighted with my approach this time; we were stable and established, maintaining good speed while flying right down the glide path, and i finally managed to settle the landing instead of bouncing around. It's about darned time!
