Leg Notes:
Laura took Tamela up first, which left little time for Austin's ride, but we made the most of it. We didn't neglect the safety briefing or any questions, and he seemed rarin' to go. Yay.
Taxiing up was typical, but we were keeping an eye out for the deer that had just been reported. Sure enough, as we positioned for takeoff, there were a few to our right, so rather than go full throttle immediately I simply rolled slowly to see if I'd get by. Of course, I didn't; just like in front of a car, when we drew about abreast the leader decided it would be smart to dash across the runway. Sheesh! Anyway, with them still at full run after crossing I then hit it and we got rolling for real.
We had other traffic in the neighborhood, but I also couldn't go far, so I took an extra turn around the pattern to climb high enough to cross over everyone else to head over to the East side. Along the way we talked a bit about navigating and being aware of where other folks were based on their radio calls, and I showed him slipping vs skidding vs coordinated flight. I also got to practice turning right for sightseeing, too, and it's still challenging.
All too soon it was time to return, and I was still on the wrong side of the pattern, so I came over high and then did some major slipping :-) to get down to pattern altitude again. I had advised Austin ahead of time, plus he had just seen the smaller version minutes ago, so he seemed fine with it. Maybe next time I'll try a spiral :-)
No sign of deer and a clean landing, and then I all but kicked him out the door so that we could swap and leave before it got too dark. Woo hoo!

From KJZP (Pickens County (GA)) 2013-09-07 22:23:03 to KCNI (Cherokee County Municipal Airport) 2013-09-07 22:59:13 [00:36:00] with 1 day and 0 night landings.

Leg Notes:
Next we bolted for home, tearing straight out, hooking over the highway, and flying straight down final. That has to be the fastest I've made that short little run :-) Yeah, it wouldn't really be an issue to be up at night, but since we're not practiced it isn't worth it. But one of these days we'll go night sightseeing again! (David Thorburn-Gundlach)
