We were late getting off because of a new friend, the cutter bee; during her walkaround, Laura sumped the right tank and got absolutely nothing. 20 minutes and some safety-wire-rooting later, the sump was cleaned out and the preflight continued.
I got to watch Laura's tracking on the GPS and her flying as well as fulfilling safety requirements, and it was very interesting to see how the dials lined up with the real world. Everything looked right, but I think we didn't take into account the NW wind that constantly blew us SE almost directly perpendicular to the holding track.
Meanwhile, I tinkered with display fields on the Garmin -- I want to get the 1-, 2-, and 3-line layouts the way we like 'em -- and checked the altimeter (and found the dial to read low against this non-certified, non-WAAS unit), although we didn't get to check in with ATC for confirmation. This will bear further study; things were pretty close on the ground (except that, as we sat still and I relayed our findings, the GPS indicated altitude went up by 8 feet ove the course of about a minute!), but they sure seemed off in the air.
Then we got to wrap early because of rain moving in; it was a moderate shower that was fun to see and watch while we were practicing, but when it came next to the airport it was time to wrap. Still, even an hour in the air is better than an hour at the office, and it was a good day!
