Leg Notes:
A good flight, but proof that I'm rusty. No problem with ground, tower, slight xwind takeoff, departure, leaning (or at least as much as was comfortable; I'm sure I could have pulled out more, but I'm happy as I was). Navigation was no big deal, but on the other hand it did consume a lot of my attention. Holding my altitude was much more challenging than usual, though; I was constantly up and down by 50 feet or more. I didn't bother with flight following, but I had Laura on COM2 along with some fellows who were meeting up for aerobatic work. Then came the ADF test...
We got an ADF swap as part of the work while we were at AvWest, and so I was going to test it on the way home. No problem, right? Imagine my surprise to find that a simple VFR short follow-the-highway solo flight consumed a good chunk of my ability; although I successfully tuned in CHERO, there was no way I was going to do anything productive with that needle. Wow! Yes, we need constant practice. All the more interesting because I had absolutely no problems taking the girls sightseeing the other evening. So what was the difference?
And, speaking of practice... Upon arrival at KCNI I found a few other folks there, which made for a busy pattern and neighborhood. Everyone was talking, though, which certainly helped. I came in over midfield and onto downwind at my turn, and even though I had things about right at the numbers and should have had no problem landing, my HEAD just wasn't properly in the game and so, between the slight crosswind here and the usual potholes in the approach, I didn't like where I was and went around. On my second pass, perhaps because I had the whole pattern to set up, everything went well and I made a pretty nice landing. I really wanted to get another while waiting for Laura, but I really wanted even more to pit stop after the dinner we had at KRYY and so it was time to put her away :-)
It sure was a great day to fly!
